A nocturnal scene with considerable influence, The Starry Night Over the Rhône (1888) is one of the masterpieces of the nineteenth century. This "cosmic poem" is an opportunity to put scientific, historical and poetic perspective. Other painters have been inspired by it such as Edvard Munch, Kasimir Malevich, Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler or more recently Tony Cragg, Alicja Kwade, Anselm Kiefer, Dove Allouche, Yves Klein, Lee Bontecou... also represented in this exhibition. The power of this composition can be found in the words of Vincent Van Gogh who said that "the night is much more alive and richly coloured than the day".
