Reattu Reimagined

The museum is reinventing itself with a special exhibition featuring nearly 100 artists and 300 works, reaffirming its status as an art museum in the city of Arles. The new display abandons a chronological approach, opting instead for a thematic logic that fosters dialogue between different eras and embraces the diversity of the collections, artistic genres, and imaginations.

Five themes will unfold throughout the galleries: History, Portrait, Body, Landscape, and Image. The collection of ancient art, representing an academic tradition that prioritizes History as a subject, will resonate with the photographic, video, and sound art collections. The modern and contemporary art collection, composed of works by artists who challenged this academic approach to promote new ways of representing and creating, will reconnect with works from the past, which become subjects of research for today's artists.

Regularly, a recent loan or acquisition will be integrated into the display, echoing the emblematic works of the collections. An example is the nymph in love with Narcissus, mirroring herself in the waters of the Liriope fountain, the subject of Jacques Réattu's last great painting, currently being restored and will be unveiled to the public for the first time in over 80 years. This new approach aims to provide visitors with a fresh perspective on the museum's collections and the evolution of art through different periods and styles. This way, the museum is also considering its role within Arles's rich cultural and artistic landscape.

Le musée se réinvente avec une exposition spéciale réunissant près de 100 artistes et 300 œuvres, réaffirmant son statut de musée d'art dans la ville d'Arles. Le nouveau dispositif abandonne une approche chronologique, optant plutôt pour une logique thématique qui favorise le dialogue entre différentes époques et embrasse la diversité des collections, des genres artistiques et de l'imagination.

Cinq thèmes se déploient dans les galeries : Histoire, Portrait, Corps, Paysage et Image. La collection d'art ancien, représentant une tradition académique qui privilégie l'Histoire comme sujet, résonne avec les collections d'art photographique, vidéo et sonore. La collection d'art moderne et contemporain, composée d'œuvres d'artistes qui ont remis en question cette approche académique pour promouvoir de nouvelles façons de représenter et de créer, renoue avec des œuvres du passé, qui deviendront des sujets de recherche pour les artistes d'aujourd'hui.

Régulièrement, un prêt ou une acquisition récente sera intégré à l'exposition, faisant écho aux œuvres emblématiques des collections. Un exemple en est la nymphe amoureuse de Narcisse, se reflétant dans les eaux de la fontaine Liriope, sujet de la dernière grande peinture de Jacques Réattu, actuellement restaurée et dévoilée au public pour la première fois en plus de 80 ans.
